"Pete Ranzany, 146, Sacramento, scored a majority decision over New York's Adolfo Viruet, 147, to win the previously vacant NABF welterweight crown Tuesday night in a slugfest at Memorial Auditorium. It was a toe-to-toe bout throughout. There were no knockdowns but Ranzany had a cut eye and Viruet suffered a closed eye. The crowd gave both fighters a standing ovation after the 4th and 5th rounds and at the end of the fight." -United Press International
