Peter Keenan 118 lbs lost to Freddie Gilroy 116 lbs by TKO in round 11 of 15

  • Date: 1959-01-10
  • Location: Kings Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
  • "A new British Empire champion was crowned at the Kings Hall when the referee stopped the bout between Freddie Gilroy, 115 3/4, and Peter Keenan, Glasgow, 117 1/2, just one second before the end of the 11th round and led a defeated and courageous Scotsman to his corner. Keenan went out like a champion. From the 1st to the 11th, he was battered by the hard-hitting Irish lad, but never flinched and at all time used his vast experience to try and overcome the fiery Gilroy who fought and boxed as if inspired. Keenan took several counts. The referee saw that the Scot had no chance against a youngster who on this night's form will be a menace against any of the world's best bantamweights." -Ring Magazine, April 1959 issue

    • After this bout Keenan announced his retirement.
