Govan Small, a 5-to-1 underdog, was comfortably ahead on all three scorecards going into the 10th round. With seconds remaining, he apparently mistook a press row telephone ringing, for the timekeeper's bell. Small dropped his hands and turned his back, and started to walk to his corner. At this point Servin, hit him with a left hook to the jaw, which sent him down to the canvas, against the ropes. Small regained his feet at four, but Servin charged after him and forced referee Dynamite Jackson's stoppage, with just eleven seconds remaining in the bout. Fans promptly booed the stoppage.
