He began boxing at the Wego Athletic Club and in 1958 won the Regional Golden Glove 118 pound title. According to an article in the September 1962 Ring magazine he had an amateur record of 197-11, scoring 83 kayoes. According to the artuicle he turned pro in 1958 and scored a first round kayo in his debut. In his second fight, a back injury caused him to lose to Jules Butch on July 6, 1959 when he could not come out for the fifth round. He returned to the ring in 1961.
