Career Review

Phil Johnson was a journeyman fighter whose career spanned three decades. Johnson was a good boxer with a sharp jab and a good punch. He fought one former world champion (Jack Delaney) and one future world champion (Jersey Joe Walcott).

His son, Harold Johnson, would go on to capture the World Light Heavyweight Championship and be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Phil and Harold Johnson became the first father/son combination to not only fight the same fighter, but lose to him as well. Both Phil and Harold suffered knockout defeats at the hands of future World Heavyweight Champion Jersey Joe Walcott in 1936 and 1950, respectively.
