Meagher, 18, died the day after losing by 3rd round knockout to Walt Miller at Beechnut Arena in Cincinnati. Meagher's head hit the canvas, where he fractured his skull. Meagher's father blamed a pair of borrowed boxing shoes for the tragedy, as he said the shoes were too large for his son. Meagher's feet became entangled after backing away from a jab, and he fell in a corner, that had caused several other boxers on the program to slip. This was the second professional bout for both Meagher and Miller, with neither man having fought as amateurs.
