"South African light heavyweight Pierre Fourie narrowly outpointed Mike Quarry of the United States over 10 rounds here tonight. Fourie earned his victory with superiority in the infighting but had to overcome the handicap of a bad gash above the left eye suffered early in the 9th round. Quarry relied on hooks to the head with both fists while Fourie varied his punches between the head and body, sapping the American's strength during the infighting. The South African was clearly superior in the early rounds, before a long succession of clinches started. But he saw his points lead being frittered away in the last two rounds as he had to concentrate on keeping Quarry from opening the wound above his eye into a potential fight stopper." -Reuters
