"Billy Backus swung at the wrong target in his WBA welterweight championship fight, and the target treated him unmercifully. The original target was Jose 'Pipino' Cuevas, the 20-year-old champion from Mexico City who became two targets when the 35-year-old ex-champ Backus began seeing double in the 1st round. After the opening round, Backus had been knocked down once, was unable to see out of his right eye, which was cut underneath, and couldn't see much out of his left. Dr. Roger Thill told referee Carlos Berrocal that activities in the Forum ring should be halted. So ended the hopes of the left-handed Backus that he could regain the welterweight championship." -Associated Press
