Primo Carnera 272 lbs beat King Levinsky 194 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1931-11-19
  • Location: Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Referee: Eddie Purdy

"Primo Carnera today had a decision victory over King Levinsky, but it was the Kingfish who was getting all the cheers and taking all the bows. Outweighed by 78 1/2 pounds, Chicago's Levinsky put up as stirring a battle as ever has been seen in the Chicago Stadium. Tearing into the hulking Carnera like a terrier into a great dane, Levinsky won the hearts of nearly 20,000 spectators, even if the unanimous decision did go against him at the end of 10 rousing rounds. Carnera outboxed Levinsky most of the way and piled up points with clubbing lefts and rights, but the King's desperate finish, so appealed to the spectators that they booed the official verdict for several minutes." -Associated Press

  • Carnera was arrested when he reached his dressing room after the fight by deputy sheriffs due to a judgement for $3,754 obtained by Fort Wayne, Ind. promoter George Biemer, who claimed Carnera ran out on a proposed bout he had scheduled.
  • Unable to locate a bonsdman, Carnera's manager Leon See had attorneys effect a compromise where Carnera would remain in his hotel room accompanied by the sheriffs overnight rather than Cook County Jail. He was scheduled to appear in court the following morning.
  • Carnera's purse of $18,000 of the $65,000 gate was attached due to an earlier writ that morning.
