Grier had just won his heavyweight match February 16th in the semifinals of the USA Boxing Heartland Regional Tournament. He returned to his corner after the fourth and final round and collapsed. He died Feb. 16, 2001. No cause of death was determined during an autopsy. The coroner said it was possible he died of simple arrhythmia.
