Ralph (Tiger) Jones was a rugged, rather slow-moving middleweight who fought most of the top middleweights of his era. By far his most remarkable win was the whipping he gave Sugar Ray Robinson in Robinson's second fight after his comeback. Robinson couldn't get started and was unable to cope with Jones's aggressive attack.

Jones also defeated Johnny Bratton, Bobby Dykes, Charles Humez (on a disputed decision), Chico Vejar, Kid Gavilan, and Rory Calhoun, among others. His win over Dykes was spectacular, in that he was well behind on points, but came back to floor his opponent twice in the tenth round and stop him.
