  • Date: 1962-03-21
  • Location: Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria
  • Boxing Illustrated, June 1962, reported:

Vienna, Austria - Ralph (Tiger ) Jones, the bull- dog battler who for a dozen years has tested the world's best middleweights, breached the Iron Curtain in an attempt to check the rise of undefeated Laszlo Papp, a hard- hooking Hungarian. Power- laden Papp [...] bewildered the Tiger with his speed and superior punching. The partisan crowd sheered him on as Jones would hammer to the body, offering stiff resistance, only to have his head rocked by jolting hooks.

Relentlessly, Jones moved in, Papp's fancy footwork kept the American off balance and swinging wildly. Jones was dropped with tremendous hooks in the second and third round, but kept fighting back.

Papp, against his strongest opposition to date, was anxious for a knockout, but the old Tiger was too tough. Jones made it to the final bell and the ten round decision moved the Hungarian {...] a few steps further in his quest for a world title bout. "

According to Boxing News March 30, 1962, Danish European Champion Christian Christensen was ringside in Vienna to study the man who was after his title.
