Bout Summary

Barthlemy worked to the body early and controlled the action. He came forward with heavier punches and threw at higher volume than Williams. Williams looked for countering opportunities but struggled to slip against his rangy opponent. Barthelemy switched between orthodox and southpaw stances and kept his opponent off balance all night, and found success working on both the outside with jabs and the inside with uppercuts. He often fought with his arms down and Williams simply failed to land effectively. The seventh round was a strong one for Barthelemy, who landed a jab-left uppercut combination that caught Williams flush. Williams tried hard and was somewhat effective going to the inside in the early rounds to neutralize Barthelemy's height and reach advantage. However, over the last five rounds, Barthelemy threw many head jabs which landed, while Williams could not get inside to either or counter. Both fighters emerged the bout in top condition. ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas noted Williams had been much too inactive recently, for long periods before this bout, hurting his chances against the the more active Barthelemy.
