Upon his arrival in Chile in 1918, Raul Ansel said he was originally from New Orleans and to have turned professional in Europe, where he claimed to to have beaten fighters such as Walter Frutier and Honey Mellody in France and Willie Lewis in Spain. None of these fights ever happened, though, and his true credentials are uncertain. The only confirmed prior fight is the loss to Angel Rodriguez in Montevideo. His claim to have been part of the famous Lafayette Escadrille during World War I is also very doubtful.
