"No. 3 lightweight contender Ruben Navarro, 136 1/2, found former state champion Raul "Lobito" Montoya, 135, a tough customer, but managed to hold on to gain a 10 round decision win. Montoya looked to be in the best condition of his career as he kept constant pressure on Navarro, and caught Ruben frequently with his looping, overhand right. But as the bout wore on, Navarro gradually became the master, mixing his punches well and refusing to let Montoya's unorthodox style get the better of him. Both men were slightly marked at the end, suffering slight cuts over the left eye. There were no knockdowns, but Ruben wound up in the first row seats after he and Montoya grappled along the ropes just prior to the final bell." -International Boxing, July 1972 issue
