He was born Walter Raymond John Elson and was managed and trained by Paddy Flood. When he was ready to turn pro Flood shortened his name to Ray J. Elson. Prior to turning to boxing Elson was a weight lifter winning several Metropolitan New York State Championships and at one time held the New York State pressing record of 335 pounds. He was featured in the June 1975 issue of The Ring magazine.
