The 1954 New England Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, Ray Lessard was trained by Allie Columbo and pulled a major upset in the semi-finals when he knocked out pre-tournament favorite Bob Woodall.

Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano made a surprise visit to the New England Golden Gloves finals and awarded his fellow Brocktonian "The Rocky Marciano Trophy" given annually to the winner of the New England Golden Gloves Heavyweight Title.

Lessard lost an unpopular decision to Len Kantal of the U.S. Marines in the first round of the Eastern Golden Gloves Tournament. His amateur record 8-1. He turned pro shortly after the Easterns.
