"Ray Lunny III, of Redwood City, turned an 'off night' into a unanimous 10 round decision over scrappy Arturo Leon of Tucson, Arizona, Monday night at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Hit with a cold on Sunday, Lunny knew he wouldn't be at his best. And he wasn't, as Leon fought a more spectacular fight, slicing open a fearsome cut on Lunny's right eye in the 3rd round and winging in solid, hard punches. But Lunny charged and landed with regularity and with superior in-fighting. And, although he looked like the loser physically with his right eye puffed and purple and his left brow slit slightly from a clash of heads in the 7th, Lunny had won. There were no knockdowns, but Lunny's right eye was a target for Leon in the 3rd, with blood splattering Ray's face. But it was not to open again and Leon lost his chance for a TKO." -San Mateo Times
Post fight comments
- "He never hurt me, never threw a good punch. But he was more aggressive, maybe that's why he won." -Arturo Leon
- "I didn't like the decision at all. I think we should have gotten at least a draw. I'd sure like to fight him somewhere else. My fighter's unhappy because he thought he did more damage than Lunny did." -Beto Martinez, Leon's manager
- "I'm grateful to get over one like that. The cold kind of drained me of my energy. I just didn't have any snap. Leon can't compare to a Tyrone Everett...luckily. But he never stopped - he was in there all the way." -Ray Lunny III
