Mancini Stops Valdez In 10th and Keeps Title

ATLANTIC CITY, Jan. 23 — Ray (Boom Boom) Mancini used two right hooks to stop Julio (Diablito) Valdez at 59 seconds of the 10th round in their scheduled 12-round lightweight bout today and retained his North American Boxing Federation title.
Mancini, of Youngstown, Ohio, improved his record to 22-1.
His only defeat came against Alexis Arguello here last Oct. 3. The 135-pound Mancini is rated fourth by the World Boxing Association. His 132-pound opponent from the Dominican Republic has a 16-10-1 record.
In the 10th round, Mancini knocked out Valdez's mouthpiece. Seconds later, Mancini ended the fight by stinging his opponent with a right hook as Valdez spun around to avoid him. Valdez got up before the count, but he appeared dazed and could not raise his gloves.
"I hit him with a tremendous hook," Mancini said. "But I didn't know it shook him till I saw him move back. I got a little overanxious, but I saw an opening with a right hand and I hit him as he was turning away."
Bob Arum, the Top Rank, Inc. promoter, said after the fight that Mancini would get a title shot sometime in April against the winner of the Jan. 30 fight between Arturo Frias, the World Boxing Association lightweight champion, and the No. 1 challenger Ernesto Espana.
Mancini, 20, is the son of Lenny (Boom Boom) Mancini, the No. 1 lightweight contender in 1941, who had been in line for a world title fight but missed the opportunity when he was drafted to serve in World War II.
