Ray Miller 131 lbs beat Tommy Grogan 134 lbs by KO in round 4 of 10

  • Date: 1929-01-11
  • Location: Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USA
  • "After being floored six times, Ray Miller, Chicago slugger, came back in the 4th round Friday night and knocked out Tommy Grogan of Omaha, in one of the most spectacular fights ever held at Olympia Arena. The victory placed Miller on the top rung of challengers for Sammy Mandell's lightweight title. The first round was fought cautiously by both, with Miller having a slight edge. Grogan caught the Chicago boy early in the 2nd, sending him to the ropes with a vicious right to the head, and was sent to the canvas a second later with another right. Reeling drunkenly, Miller was up at two. Six times in all he hit the deck and rebounded without taking a full nine count, which his handlers were yelling for him to do. Apparently refreshed, Miller was not in difficulty during the 3rd round. In the 4th, after taking a hard crack on the head, he retreated to a neutral corner. Grogan followed and caught a wicked left hook flush on the jaw. He fell like lead and lay on his back desperately attempting to turn over while the referee tolled the 10-count." -United Press
