Ray Patterson vs. Paul Kraus
Ray Patterson 194 lbs beat Pauli Kraus 218 lbs by TKO in round 5 of 6
- Date: 1965-08-02
- Location: Jordal Amfi Theater, Oslo, Norway
Ray Patterson, kid brother of Floyd Patterson, drew a large crowd of 8000 to the open air arena Jordal Amfi in Oslo. In June he had beat the German heavy Jurgen Blin on points in the same ring. This time he took on German- born Pauli Kraus ( 10- 9 -4 ), nicknamed " The Bomber " who was now fighting in Holland under the management of Henk Ruhling. Ray started with self confidence, punching with both hands and looking very much like Floyd. The crowd gasped as Kraus suddenly put Patterson on the deck in the 1st round with a left swing. Ray got up and kept a firing away, now with some caution. It soon became clear that " The Bomber " was looking for another lucky punch. He soaked up punches in round 3 and 4. In round 5 he had had enough and that's what he cried out loud as he lifted his arms in defeat.
Bomber Kraus brought clownish elements to Norwegian boxing. As he was presented from his corner, he took out his gumshield, bowed elegantly in all directions, smiled and exposed two missing front teeths. He was invited back to Oslo two years later to outpoint Belgian Valere Mahau. Again Kraus' wife was cheering him from ringside.
