Ray Phillips was born Raymond Philbrick in 1933 and turned pro in 1950 fighting under the name Billy Thompson (Global ID 227874). He was inactive in 1953 and 1954 while he served in the US Army. During his tenure in the service he was a coach of the Ft. Devens, Massachusetts boxing team. After his discharge in 1955 he returned to the ring under the name Ray Phillips.
