According to an Australian Imperial Force Attestation Paper for Service Abroad found in the Australia, WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 database on Ancestry.com, Reginald George Joseph Sproule, a 21-year-old "pugilist," joined the service on August 2, 1915. Sproule signed the paper on August 5, 1915.

He served in the Australian Imperial Force and was wounded twice, the first time during the Battle of the Somme. After the war, Sproule apparently was confined to a mental hospital for many years until his death in 1949.
