Rex Layne 194 lbs beat Joe Kahut 179 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12

"Rex Layne slugged out a unanimous 12-round decision over Joe Kahut Tuesday night at the Civic Auditorium to lay claim to the Far-Western heavyweight title. Layne, 194, from Salt Lake City, carried the fight to Kahut, 179, of Woodburn, Ore., almost all the way. After a slow three rounds, the two fighters opened up and began heavy hitting. Kahut started the Utah fighter's nose bleeding in the last of the 3rd round. It gave Rex some trouble through the fight but he kept drilling at his opponent with hard body and head blows. Only in the 5th did Kahut catch Layne with his favorite overhand right. It shook the Utah boy and Kahut stayed on top of him throughout that round. In the 8th, Layne literally belted Kahut around the ring, but Kahut retreated before the onslaught of lefts and rights and managed to stay on his feet. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
