  • Location: Fairgrounds Coliseum, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
  • "A turnout est. at 7,000 or so, watched rowdy Rex Layne carve out a unanimous but hard-earned decision over Turkey Thompson of Los Angeles Tuesday night at the Coliseum. And though it was Layne who carved out the clear-cut verdict, it was Thompson who did most of the carving. The Californian had Layne's face a bloody mess after the 3rd round. Thompson shook off dozens of Sunday punches and refused to go down once during the tense battle. There was never a doubt about the decision, but there was no small amount of concern as to how long Layne could keep away from Thompson's murderous hooks. There wasn't a knockdown in the battle, but there were plenty of knockdown punches delivered. Layne was hit plenty, but he dished out twice as many to Thompson. Each roared back - Layne with left jabs and rights to Thompson's head - Thompson with whacking hooks to Layne's ribs and head. There were moments when the two clinched, but it took nothing from the fight which will go down as one of the best." -Salt Lake Tribune
