Summary

Dunne dropped Cordoba late in round three with a hard left hook, but Cordoba survived the remaining seconds of the round. Cordoba came back strong to drop Dunne twice in the fifth round. Dunne recovered well in the sixth, and seemed to get increasingly stronger as the fight progressed. He finally floored Cordoba three times in the eleventh round to win the world title. Cordoba was taken from the ring on a stretcher.

Dunne’s Irish heart was just unstoppable on this night. He fought back and the war continued, both men giving no quarter. At the start of the eleventh round, Cordoba was ahead on the scorecards 95-92, 96-91, & 97-90 and the title seemed headed back to Panama. However, champion was exhausted and Dunne came out like a predator, sensing that he needed a knockout. Dunne battered Cordoba, floored him three times and made Ireland proud. An incredible turnabout.

Dunn was cut over his left eye in 4th round, Cordoba cut right eye in 5th.
