"Don Fullmer, a boxer for the past 16 years, was retired from the ring Monday night. Fullmer's manager, Angelo Curley, announced the retirement shortly after the veteran fighter was defeated soundly in a 10 round light heavyweight bout with Richie Kates. Kates, 21, took advantage of his 13 year advantage by pounding Fullmer with short, speedy jabs throughout the fight. Fullmer, 34, tried desperately to mount an attack, but the swift Kates avoided his body combinations which failed to land. Kates bloodied Fullmer's nose in the 4th round with a right jab and opened a cut on his forehead in the 6th, which bled through the remainder of the fight." -United Press International

- "I don't want him to get hurt. I'm retiring him as of now. He's got bad ribs and lost his speed and zip." -Angelo Curley, Fullmer's manager
- "I'm in accord with my manager to quit the boxing game that has been nice and good to me while I can still walk out of the ring. I was hit in the ribs in the first round and I was scared because I could hardly breathe. Old men don't cry." -Don Fullmer
