Brother of Kari Meronen and Erkki Meronen, as an amateur Meronen represented the Vyborg Boxers and Tapanila. He fought three times as a professional in 1969–1972 and won all his bouts. He has since worked as a coach at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and as a TV commentator in boxing competitions.
