Ritchie Mendoza did no boxing until after entering the Naval Air Corps in 1943. As a member of the Air Corps, he entered and won the East Coast Naval Golden Gloves lightweight title. He did some other fighting while in the Air Corps at which time he was no amateur. Ritchie had 1200 flying hours to his credit, and was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as three Air Medals. In 1946 he started attending Santa Monica City College.
