Report by Brent Hunter

In what was a history making night for the city of Dubbo, local boy Robert 'Gummy' Toomey made his first defence of the Australian lightweight title which he won in December last year. Fighting in front of a big and very vocal crowd Gummy was methodical in breaking down a gallant Ty Gilchrist.
Gilchrist tried hard but it was evident from the opening round that Gummy's years of fighting  all the big names in Aussie boxing gave him a class advantage, as he was able to land solid jabs and damaging body shots at will.
Toomey's clinical approach to this fight was to the fore and stuck to the game plan by continuing to apply the pressure throughout the middle of the rounds and finish them off strongly to win the rounds in dominant fashion.
As has been Toomey's trademark of switching effectively, he switched in the 3rd round to southpaw only for Gilchrist to appear a little more comfortable and probably had his best round of the fight, Gummy realising this settled back into orthodox and continued the onslaught to both Gilchrist's head and body.
As the rounds wore on Gilchrist's corner were becoming more concerned with their charge who continued to absorb heavy punishment and a couple of times looked as though they were ready to throw the towel, but credit to the warrior Gilchrist he would try and rally back.
In the 8th round with Gummy stepping it up with both speed and precision hitting the corner threw the towel in to save their tough warrior any more punishment.
Gummy for the first time in three or four fights could use both arms effectively after having shoulder surgery after his title win in December.

A fit and sound Toomey is an exciting boxer to watch out for as he strives to dominate the Australian lightweight scene.
