"Roberto Duran, who holds the WBA version of the 135 pound crown, stopped previously undefeated southpaw Juan 'Cachorro' Medina of Nayarit, Mexico, in the 7th round at the Olympic Auditorium Thursday night. Medina, who absorbed a terrific body beating and had both eyes swollen, went down early in the 7th. he got up but was about to drop again when referee George Latka called a halt at 1:22 in the non-title bout slated for 10. Duran suffered a cut alongside his right eye but not serious enough to keep him off the March 17th card (a 10 rounder against Javier Ayala at the L.A. Sports Arena). Duran showed a rugged body attack and some sharp-shooting to the head after settling down from an early flair of wildness. Medina's left-handed style had Duran fooled about the first half of the first round, but from then on he wasn't confused. Referee Latka gave Medina the first round, but from then on it was all Duran." -Associated Press
