Roberto Duran 147 lbs beat Monroe Brooks 143 lbs by KO at 1:59 in round 8 of 12

  • Date: 1978-12-08
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Arthur Mercante

"Judging from his performance Friday night at Madison Square Garden, Roberto Duran may be equally imposing in the heavier welterweight division. Fighting at 147 pounds, 12 over the lightweight limit, Duran knocked out Monroe Brooks of Los Angeles at 1:59 of the 8th round with a left hook to the liver. Brooks, regarded as a ranked contender at 140, absorbed tremendous punishment throughout the scheduled 10 round bout. Staggered repeatedly by left hooks and right crosses, Brooks was nearly dropped a few times but never fell until the knockout. He struggled to his feet at the count of 10 but referee Arthur Mercante waved his arms signaling the end of the non-title fight." -United Press International
