Pre-fight comment

  • "We went into this fight blind. It now looks like Rodolfo will have plenty at stake plus a real tough opponent. But I'm really not too worried. Before the end of the year or maybe by next year I think Rodolfo will be the lightweight champ." -Danny Villanueva, Gonzalez' manager

"Lightning quick Rodolfo Gonzalez, Long Beach, Calif., blasted Julio Viera to the mat with one of the first punches in the fight, then scored a 2 round KO in the main event. Gonzalez used a fast left hook to score the first knockdown. Viera, Caracas, Venezuela, was up at the count of eight and fought well until the end of the round. But after the first 30 seconds of the second round, he was wobbly. The Long Beach bomber used a heavy body attack to score another knockdown in the 1st minute of the 2nd round and when Viera arose, another fierce left hook caught him on the jaw. The force of the blow sent Viera reeling across the ring and he landed with his shoulders on the bottom strand of the ropes. Seconds later at 2:10 of the round, referee John Thomas stopped the bout." -Pasadena Star-News
