"NABF super bantamweight champion Rodolfo Martinez left Municipal Auditorium Tuesday night with a hard-fought 10 round decision. Martinez used hard body punches spiced with occasional jabs and combinations to win a controversial split decision over the WBA's 7th ranked bantamweight Gilberto Illueca of Panama. The decision drew boos from the 4,772 spectators and left Illueca weeping in the center of the ring. Illueca had danced the entire fight, stinging Martinez with hard jabs and rights. In the 8th round a left hook by Illueca brought blood trickling from the former bantamweight champion's nose. Illueca had a look of disbelief when he heard the ring announcer proclaim Martinez the winner by split decision." -San Antonio Express

- "I'm happy to say hello to the public here in Texas. It's not their fault, it's the judges fault. The public will say I won the fight and that's all that matters to me." -Gilberto Illueca
