"Columbian Rodrigo Valdes sliced open cuts over both of Bobby Cassidy's eyes Monday night to win a 7th round TKO in their scheduled 10 round middleweight bout at MSG. Cassidy was cut beside the left eye in the 1st round and over the right eye two rounds later. Valdes opened the right eye cut wider in the opening seconds of the 7th round and Dr. Edwin Campbell rushed into the ring motioning for the fight to be halted." -United Press International

  • Unknown to Cassidy at this time, he entered the ring suffering from hepatitis, which he passed onto Valdes during the course of their bout. Cassidy was out of the ring for seven months once the symptoms kicked in. And Valdes - who fought two more bouts during the malady's incubation period - was out for almost six months.
