"Rogelio Lara of Mexico, won the California State bantamweight title Wednesday night by a split decision over Rudy Villagonza of Stockton in a free-swinging 12 round bout. Both fighters tagged each other frequently with rights and lefts, but there were no knockdowns in the bout before 3,003 fans who paid $17,283. Referee Peter Morelli and judge Al Martinez gave the nod to Lara, 118, while judge Bob Mitchell favored Villagonza, 117 1/2, originally from the Philippines." -Associated Press
