Roland LaStarza 189 lbs beat Rocky Jones 178 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Chester's Rocky Jones ripped open Roland LaStarza's left eye in the 1st round, floored him in the 2nd to the screeching surprise of 3,000 partisan fans but lost the 10-round decision here Monday night at the Eastern Parkway Arena. Although outweighed by 11 1/4 pounds and a 3-1 underdog in the betting, Jones appeared to be repeating his previous upset win over LaStarza in the first two rounds. Three right hands opened the cut on the outside corner of LaStarza's left eye in the 1st round and a vicious left hook in the 2nd sent him to the deck for a count of two. But in the 3rd, LaStarza came back to drop Jones for a three-count with a straight right to the jaw and from that moment on LaStarza was in command. In the 8th and 9th LaStarza opened up with everything. In the 9th particularly, LaStarza belted Jones almost at will. The New Yorker's eye leaked blood in almost every round and he left the ring looking more like the loser than a unanimous winner." - The Chester Times

  • Unofficial Chester Times scorecard - 6-2-2 LaStarza
  • Unofficial UP scorecard - 7-2-1 LaStarza
  • Jones had been promised a fight with Rex Layne in Salt Lake City if he could repeat his win over LaStarza. However, the offer then went to LaStarza with matchmaker Teddy Brenner offering Layne $10,000 to meet LaStarza at the Eastern Parkway Arena. But it was Madison Square Garden that won out on the bidding and LaStarza met Layne in his next bout in the Garden.
  • Post-fight comment: "Any place but here, this fight wouldn't have gone into the 2nd round. Oh, well, Rocky gave LaStarza a good, tough fight and he hasn't a thing to be ashamed about." - Frankie Green, Jones' manager, complaining that the fight should have been stopped due to the cut.
