"Ron Lyle of Denver called his opponent "a helluva fighter" after stopping a bloody Boone Kirkman Tuesday night with 58 seconds left in the 8th round of their scheduled 10 round heavyweight bout. Each fighter had been ordered to stay in close, and they did. However, Lyle appeared to have the best of it in the early going, landing some sharp uppercuts to Kirkman's head. Kirkman began bleeding from the nose and mouth in the early rounds but seemed to gain strength as the fight progressed, and got in some solid shots to Lyle's head. The fight was stopped after Kirkman sustained a deep, inch-long gash under his left eye. Dr. Alex Grinstein, the ring physician, took a long look at the cut, decided it could spread, and ordered the bout stopped at the 2:02 mark." -Associated Press
