Ron Lyle 218 lbs beat George Johnson 224 lbs by KO at 0:31 in round 3 of 10
- Date: 1972-03-25
- Location: Denver Coliseum, Denver, Colorado, USA
- Referee: Jack Cappelli
"Ron Lyle put away George 'Scrap Iron' Johnson in 31 seconds of the 3rd round Saturday night before 7,703 fans in the Denver Coliseum. Johnson's style of footwork was to place one foot in front of itself. He did precisely that, leaning his head into Lyle's left shoulder and pounding Lyle's midsection. Lyle was content with that in the 1st round, but he laid some left-right combinations on Johnson in the 2nd round that staggered the Los Angeles fighter. Johnson seemed to snap out of it to open the 3rd, but as he backed away from Lyle, the unbeaten Denverite put two quick lefts on his head. Johnson crashed forward like a redwood and just made it to his knees when referee Jack Capelli gave him the 10-count." -The Denver Gazette-Telegraph
- Johnson was a substitute for the injured Tony Doyle.
- Lyle and Johnson fought in a 20 ft. ring instead of the standard 16 ft. ring due to Doyle's insistence on the larger ring prior to his injury.
