"Rory Calhoun whipped third-ranking Joey Giambra last night in one of the most savage brawls ever staged in the Cow Palace. Last night's encounter was one of the tougher ones Rory has had since he became a headliner. His big round was the 4th when he stunned Giambra with a right and then pummeled him around the ring at will. The only knockdown came in Calhoun's big 4th when Giambra went down from what seemed to be primarily a push administered by the stronger Rory. Fast left hooks by Giambra twice buckled Calhoun's knees in the next few rounds, but the rugged Easterner came on to gain an edge in the final three. Obviously needing a desperation knockout to win, Joey instead found his own legs rubbery and was bleeding from the mouth. He had nothing left for a closing offensive." -Hayward Daily Review
- The Daily Review had two reporters covering the fight. They scored the bout 97-91 and 96-90, both for Calhoun.

- "I'll take on any of them now for the right to a shot at the title. I'll rest for a couple of months to let this cut on my cheek heal. But then I'm ready for them all." -Rory Calhoun, when asked if he was ready for Gene Fullmer, Charles Humez or Joey Giardello
