Rory Calhoun 160 lbs beat Willie Vaughn 159 lbs by TKO at 2:28 in round 8 of 10

  • Date: 1956-06-22
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Ruby Goldstein

"Rory Calhoun, an unbeaten young middleweight with 22 straight victories, is ready to crash the top 10 in the division rankings. Calhoun, a slugger from White Plains, N.Y., isn't ready for a Sugar Ray Robinson yet. He is too easy too hit as Willie Vaughn, Los Angeles, found out Friday night. Although Calhoun, 160 1/2, stopped Vaughn, 159, on a TKO at 2:28 of the 8th round of a 10 round match at MSG, he was in trouble in the 6th. Calhoun dropped Vaughn in the 3rd and twice in the 8th before referee Ruby Goldstein stopped it. There is no indication that Calhoun owns a Rocky Marciano-type punch but he does resemble Rocky in the way he keeps pressing an opponent, winging his overhand right." -Associated Press
