Roy Askevold beat Michel Petit by PTS in round 6 of 6

  • Date: 1971-09-09
  • Location: Nordstrandhallen, Oslo, Norway
  • It was a case of "victory over myself" when Norwegian Roy Askvold unexpectedly made a comeback at the age of 36. He hadn't fought in a ring since 1966 when his career was brutally stopped by Jack Johnson of Aruba. Askvold had however battled alcoholism and depression in the following years, but the summer of 1971 saw him trim down 100 kilos to his old 75 kilos frame. He never touched alcohol again.

Against Frenchman Michel Petit, Askvold boxed in a classic style with a left jab which stopped the Frenchman in his tracks, making him miss. A popular victory.

During the 70's Askvold kept in touch with his old amateur club, was a quite and wise cornerman to many a young amateur. In 1978 he trained the few Norwegian pros left in the twilight of the game in Norway before it was prohibited by the government in 1980. Fate dealt Roy Askvold terrible blows in his later life. Although gravely ill, he was a guest of honor and the last one to leave when the Norwegian Amateur Boxing Union celebrated its 100 years jubilee in 2004.
