"A crowd of 8,000 was displeased with the manner in which Roy Harris, the No. 6 heavyweight contender, defeated Joe Bygraves, the former British Commonwealth champion, Tuesday night. The school teacher from Cut and Shoot, Texas, took a close but unanimous 10-round decision over the Britisher in the Sam Houston Coliseum. The crowd paid a gate of about $25,000 and saw little more than infighting and counter-punches. Both fighters heard boos every round and referee Ernie Taylor spent a busy evening breaking clinches. Purported to be a good body puncher, Bygraves made few efforts to connect. The usual Harris tactics of lunge, punch and clinch had little success. A butt from the head of Bygraves cut Harris' chin in the 5th. His seconds, including manager Lou Viscusi, had no trouble stopping the bleeding after the round and the cut caused no apparent trouble." -Associated Press
