ROY JONES GETS 60TH PRO WIN
By Scott Shaffer, boxingtalk.com, March 8, 2015

Roy Jones TKO2 Willie Williams... Boxing legend Roy Jones continues to fight and win, although the level of his competition keeps dropping lower and lower. Because Jones is 46 years old and has suffered through some big knockouts, that is a good thing. On Friday, the Roy Jones show came to Concord, North Carolina, where Jones easily defeated Willie Williams in two rounds. The bout is best described as a lay-up or a victory lap for Jones (60-8), who was listed at 201 pounds. Before a truly appreciative crowd, Jones executed flurries and step-away moves that recalled his prime form. Make no mistake though, Williams, at 14-9-2, is the weakest opponent Jones has faced since his first few pro fights over a quarter of a century ago, and Jones is no longer a serious contender. But this weekend, Jones once again did whatever he wanted in the ring. He trapped Williams against the ropes in the second round and landed a combination that knocked Williams down. Veteran referee Bill Clancy stopped the bout even though Williams beat the count, but no one seemed to upset. Nobody got seriously hurt and all those in attendance can now tell their boxing buddies they saw the great Roy Jones score a TKO live and in person.

Notes

  • This was Jones' sixth consecutive win since losing to Denis Lebedev by a tenth-round knockout on May 21, 2011.
  • This was Jones' first fight in the United States since outpointing Max Alexander over ten rounds on December 10, 2011, in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Entering the bout, Williams was 2-6-1 in his previous nine fights.
