Coffman went to the 1924 Olympics in Paris as an alternate at 135 lbs, having lost to Freddy Boylstein in the Olympic Trials at Boston. He had beaten Murray Israel. The other boxer at 135 was Ben Rothwell, who had also lost to Boylstein. The finals of the trials were also the finals of the National AAU Championships.
