Ruben Olivares 126 lbs lost to David Kotey 126 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

"David Kotey of Ghana won a split decision and the WBC featherweight championship from Mexico's Ruben Olivares in a fight with a riotous ending at the Forum Saturday night. The crowd of 8,000 was largely pro-Olivares and erupted with a bottle-and-chair-throwing demonstration when it was obvious Kotey had won even though the decision never was formally announced in the ring. Kotey knocked Olivares down with a left hook in the 1st round and the Mexican suffered a cut over his left eye from a butt in the 12th round of a battle that went the full 15. Scored under the 10 point must system, the fight was so close that only one point separated the two fighters on each of the cards." -Pasadena Star-News

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 142-141 Kotey
  • Unofficial L.A. Times scorecard - 144-141 Olivares
  • Both of Kotey's trainers - Francis Clottey and Chickie Ferrera - were injured in the riot afterwards.
  • The decision was simply flashed to the crowd via the overhead scoreboard some 30 minutes later.
  • Purses: Olivares - $80,000, Kotey - $1,500
