"Ruben Olivares, Mexico's No. 1 contender for Lionel Rose's bantamweight title, was knocked down in the 2nd round by Ernie De La Cruz of the Philippines Monday night but came back to get a 9th round knockout before a Forum crowd of 8,495. Olivares took a mandatory eight count midway through the 2nd round after taking a right to the head. The 21 year old Mexican took command in the 4th round and punished his opponent severely in the 8th before the 46th knockout of his career the following round." -United Press International
