"World bantamweight champ, Ruben Olivares, 123, Mexico, knocked out Valentin (Kid Pasqualito) Galeano, 123, Paraguay, in the 9th round of their non-title match billed for 10 rounds. The courageous Galeano caught Olivares with a solid left hook to the jaw early in the 3rd, dumping Ruben on the seat of his pants. Olivares jumped up immediately and from there on it was a case of how much damage Galeano could absorb. The champion connected with a left hook in the 9th round and the South American fell back toward the ropes. Olivares closed in for the kill and was dealing out heavy punishment on the ropes when referee Rudy Jordan halted matters in 2:28 of the 9th. Galeano fought the last two rounds with his right eye swollen shut and bleeding freely from the nose." -Pasadena Star-News
