Rubin Carter 157 lbs drew with Wilbert McClure 161 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Middleweight Rubin (Hurricane) Carter scored a majority 10-round decision Tuesday night over former Olympic boxing champion Wilbert (Skeeter) McClure in a rematch of their similar donnybrook of two months ago. A knockdown in the 7th round provided the margin for Carter on points. McClure, of Toledo, had been out-boxing Carter and was leading on all cards up until the Paterson, N.J., fighter floored him with a hard right to the chin for a seven-count with two minutes gone in the round. There were no other knockdowns. McClure, until Carter's clout jolted him off his feet, had been making the 7th his best round of the fight." -Associated Press

  • The next morning, the Toledo Boxing Commission, chaired by Sam Youngheart, nullified the decision for Carter, after a chance inspection of the scorecards turned up an error on referee Johnny Ousky's card. According to Youngheart, Ousky, who scored the 9th round for McClure, only awarded him 4 points instead of 5 for the round, which turned his card of 45-44 for Carter to a 45-45 Even card.
  • Carter's manager Pat Amato protested to Abe Greene of the WBA, but Greene ruled that he had no authority to overrule a local commission in a case of error or typography. Greene stated it was apparently an honest error.
