"NABF cruiserweight champion ST Gordon has handed perennial championship contender Alvaro 'Yaqui' Lopez his 12th career loss and 5th defeat as a challenger. Gordon, of Santa Monica, took advantage of Lopez's reputation for cutting by opening a small gash over the challenger's left eye early in the 1st round Friday night at the MGM Grand-Reno. After nearly putting away Lopez, of Stockton, in the 1st, Gordon fought off a strong comeback by the contender in the 2nd, then opened a bloody cut over Lopez's right eye with a savage right in the 3rd round of the scheduled 12 round contest. With eight seconds left in the round, referee Mills Lane stopped the bout to let ring doctor Edward Dehne look at the eye. Dehne let the bout continue and Gordon continued a largely defenseless fight, occasionally snapping a sharp left jab at the right eye until the 7th, when Lane stopped the fight." -Associated Press
